Thankfulness: A dish best served Southern fried…
Here in the South, food is a staple of our culture. We grieve with food, celebrate with food, comfort with food… You get my drift. Thanksgiving is, of course, no different. If this is a holiday specifically for food, you can bet that we Southerners will be there with bells on. However, like all other aspects of our culture, we do things just a little differently. Here are ten (and one to grow on) Southern comfort foods our Thanksgiving tables simply aren’t complete without.
Misled folk of the Northern stock may try to persuade you to reference this as stuffing. But, resist, I say. Resist! Everyone’s family has a different recipe for this, and, chances are, you probably think your family has the best one. Hardboiled egg or no hardboiled egg? Include turkey jiblets or go without? Should I sprinkle bits of magic and angel dust into the seasoning? The possibilities are endless, yet we all know this truth: the line between just moist enough and too dry is thin. Tread carefully, my friends.
2. Sweet Potato Pie
Is it really that delicious, or is this dish’s physical beauty so astounding that we can taste it?
3. Greens, greens, and more greens.
This translates to: turnip greens and collard greens. Pass the Texas Pete, please and thank you. Seasoned with a hearty helping of ham hock, this food is a staple on our tables at Thanksgiving. Call me coarse, but we all know that, with this in the meal mix, you won’t have to stop at the convenience store for gas on the way home, amen?
4. Squash Casserole
Yellow as the sun and served almost as hot, this delicious dish is best when it is .5% squash and 99.5% cheese. The jury is still out on whether the best topping is Ritz crackers or, you guessed it, more cheese.
5. Sweet Potato Casserole.
If you say soufflé, I shall assume you sneezed, and though I will bless you, I won’t be sitting near you at the kids’ table. Sweet enough to be a dessert, yet it knows its place right between the dressin’ and turkey. Be sure to throw those glazed pecans on top, now, ya hear?
Orange like a sweet potato, yet savory like a turnip, this Southern staple would be classified as a green if it weren’t…well…orange. If I had to choose one Thanksgiving dish to devour while forsaking all others, this would be it. What’s that liquid they are boiled in, you ask? Those are the angels’ tears of joy.
7. Butter Beans
Lima is the capital of Peru, not a proper way to address this creamy, crazy-good delight.
8. Pecan Pie
Your grandmother has been paying your younger cousins some serious pecan-picking-up money to make this pie happen. Crunchy on top, gooey in the middle, and flaky on bottom, this pie makes every dollar per bucket she had to shell out to those rascals totally worth it.
Pink Eye Purple Hulls, Cream 40s, Cream 8s, Black-Eyed, Zippers….the possibilities are endless. Thank goodness for those summer gardens that ensure our Thanksgiving spreads shall abound in deliciousness.
10. Zippy Tomato Relish (to dress those peas up)
How dare you even suggest that I eat my peas naked! Peas need a little somethin’, somethin’ to take their status from good to slap yo’ momma delicious. This sweet sauce will tickle your fancy in places your fancy didn’t even know it could be tickled.
Blue Ribbon- Sweet Tea
Such a cliché Southern staple, and with good reason. Whether you’re served brown water or tea so sweet it makes your eyes cross, no beverage pairs better with the Thanksgiving feast!
